Week 8 marks the transition from classroom instruction to supervised, hands-on training in our participating barbershops. This is the point at which a student formally becomes a registered apprentice. Placement is not simply a scheduling exercise; it is the beginning of a legal and professional relationship between the apprentice, the sponsoring/employer. Understanding the onboarding process, and the responsibilities of each party will help students start their apprenticeship with confidence and avoid delays.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this week, students will be able to:
Describe the purpose and structure of placement orientation and what to expect on the first day at a host barbershop.
Identify the role of the assigned barber mentor and the expectations of the mentor-apprentice relationship.
Update and verify personal account information with Skilled Trades Ontario (STO).
Explain the purpose of the apprenticeship logbook and correctly record hours and skill sets.
Identify the key components of the apprenticeship agreement and the obligations it creates for the apprentice, employer, and sponsor.
Identify available government grants and financial supports for registered apprentices and complete the steps required to apply.
